How Healthy is Your Healthy Choice?

Your Healthy Choice, Weight Watchers and Lean Cuisine lunches, they’re a healthy choice, right? Not too many calories, low in fat, the marketing and advertising on the boxes, in the grocery store and on TV say that it’s a good choice. So it must, in fact be a smart, healthy choice. The piece of the label that so many consumers don’t think to look at are the ingredients.

Grab one of those boxes out of the freezer, take a look at the list of ingredients. See if you can pronounce all of them, if you recognize 5 of them. Do they have ‘flavors’ added or ‘colors’ added? Why would you need to add flavor or color if you are getting real veggies with real meat, pasta or a tasty sauce?

The answer. Those boxed lunches are just about as good for you as the ‘healthy choice’ on any fast food menu. They are terrible for you. They are not a healthy serving of protein or veggies. Cut open the what they call ‘chicken’ and really look inside of it. Does that look like the real chicken breasts you get out of the package and cook at home? No! It has funny holes in it, it looks spongy. It certainly does not look like is chicken. That is something to think about.

Your food should look the part. If it does not, something is terribly wrong. That means it has fillers, artificial flavors, preservatives and the chicken itself was kept in a tiny little coop where it was unable to move, unable to walk around and eat, it was fed enhanced hormones that make it so top heavy that even if it had the room to walk around it physically wouldn’t be able to. Discussed enough? Do something about it.

Take time. Plan and prepare real food. I’m not suggesting that you run out and become a farmer. But I do think it’s important for you understand what you are eating and where it is coming from. Grab some real fruits and veggies from the produce section, find a couple healthy recipes or just take them home and steam them, throw some seasonings on there, pack it up and take it to work. Buy some organic protein, it’s worth it. Bake several pieces on a Sunday and have it ready for the work week. It won’t take that much time, but it will be greatly rewarding; to you waist and your conscience.
