Newtown, Powys is nestled along the banks of the River Severn. Like many towns across the UK, Newtown is steeped in tradition, with thick roots firmly holding on to its past. This is a proud community boasting origins that date back to the early 1300s.
The textile and flannel industries contributed heavily to its growth. Another important factor in the growth and survival of Newtown, was the building of the Montgomeryshire Canal. These and other factors allowed the town to prosper.
Today Newtown, Powys rests in a slender valley. Its population is more than 13, 000 making it the largest town in Powys, Wales. Located a little more than twenty miles from the English border, it’s become a popular spot for travelers within the region.
Gone are the majority of more than 50 pubs, hotel, and breweries that dotted the landscape. Landmarks such as the Crown Brewery and The Angel hotel have long since closed their doors, with new businesses moving in to take their place. Newton, Powys is modernizing. The town has shown progressive thinking by electing a female mayor, 22-year resident, Sue Lawson. Today it’s considered a haven for the Arts in mid-Whales.
Art galleries, several museums, theaters, and a cinema are just a few of the things to do when your in town. Lantham Park plays host to Newtown AFC, a member of the Welsh Premier Football League. The stadium is considered the best in the league, while the team has twice qualified for UEFA Cup play. While the games’ attendance numbers aren’t huge, having a well-known sports club can only make a destination more popular.
Visitors and permanent residents have plenty of attractions and activities to keep them entertained, but not to be overlooked is Newton, Powys overall natural beauty. Tree covered hills rise on the north and south ends of town. The majestic River Severn, more than 200 miles long, is the longest river in Great Britain. Wildlife is abundant in and along the river adding to the beauty and nostalgia of the town.
